Then 15 and March...
Transformation of Grantham Green
Our part is complete! These are some of our album pictures showing the changes
Ted's Bench at Grantham Green
We were pleased to unveil a bench dedicated to Ted Baker, who died in January 2017.
Ted was a volunteer walk leader with our society but he also played a huge role in the lives of many people with learning disabilities in our community. He was always present at Friday Night Club at the QE2 Activity Centre and on the holidays and outings that his wife, Helga organized and he was regarded as a close friend by many people.
Helga and daughter, Ellen unveiled the bench in front of a crowd of 55 friends and family who came along to remember Ted.
Grantham Green - 2018 Season
We were successful in obtaining a grant from the People’s Postcode Lottery last year to fund the work of the Grantham Green Growers for a year as well as providing additional wild flower turves, a bench and a stumpery.
The stumpery has arrived although it is still behind the barriers to allow the young plants to get established, more news on that in future issues.
Spring is nearly with us!
We are looking forward to starting our fortnightly maintenance sessions on the crescent border at Grantham Green.
For the first of our sessions, we will be laying down some bark chippings around the shrubs to help keep the moisture in and hopefully keep the weeds down too.
You are welcome to join us if you are interested in becoming part of our team.

Come and help us make Grantham Green a riot of colour in the spring. Maria Dowding and others will be on hand to show you what to do.
Tools and bulbs are provided. Just dress appropriately (warm clothes and good footwear) and be prepared to do a bit of work. We will all reap the benefits next spring!
Bulb planting from 10.00 to 13.00 each day.
Grantham Green Growers was a new service started in July 2017 following the transformation of the site over the previous eight months. People with learning disabilities who enjoy gardening will be working on maintaining the shrubs at Grantham Green every two weeks or so, throughout the year.
In 2016 members of Eastleigh Borough & Romsey MENCAP were asked about their usage of Grantham Green, they responded that they used it but preferred Eastleigh Recreation Ground because there were more places to sit, more interesting planting and better bio-diversity. These responses were included in Eastleigh Borough Council’s transformation plan and as a result ornamental shrubs, wildflower turf and additional benches have been provided. People with learning disabilities are also going to be involved in maintaining the ornamental beds and have a watching brief over the wild flower turf.
We are recruiting local volunteers to work with our members in this endeavour. This is a great opportunity to meet people with learning disabilities and to enjoy working alongside them in the fresh air. Our horticultural Co-ordinator, Maria will be teaching skills, so this could be a way of enhancing your gardening knowledge.
...to help us maintain the ornamental shrubs at Grantham Green. Members of Eastleigh Borough & Romsey MENCAP society will be maintaining the shrubs throughout the year.
We are looking for local volunteers to work alongside us. No horticultural knowledge needed, just an interest in people, ability to work as part of a team and a desire to learn. Work will take place on Friday mornings 10 -12.
Our services are open to anyone with a learning disability who lives in the borough of Eastleigh or in Romsey.
Our constitution limits the offer of our services to people with learning disabilities living in this geographical area. Much of our funding is raised locally for the benefit of local people with learning disabilities.
